Background and Objective: Marital distress is a prevalent issue with significant psychological and social implications. Couples experiencing marital conflict often struggle with communication difficulties, negative interaction patterns, and emotional dysregulation. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of mindfulness-based training in enhancing self-awareness, responsibility, and relationship quality among couples seeking counseling for marital issues.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study utilized a pre-test-post-test control group design. The study population comprised all couples seeking counseling services in Dezful, Iran, in 2023. From this population, a convenience sample of 30 participants was selected and randomly assigned to either a mindfulness training group or a control group. Participants in both groups completed questionnaires assessing self-awareness, responsibility, and couples' perception at both the beginning and end of the study. The experimental group participated in eight 60-minute mindfulness-based training sessions over a period of two weeks, while the control group received no intervention. Covariance analysis was employed using SPSS (version 27.0) to analyze the collected data.
Results: The results demonstrated a significant increase in self-awareness, responsibility, and relationship quality among participants in the mindfulness-based training group compared to the control group (P<0.001). Notably, the experimental group exhibited a substantial increase in mean scores for self-awareness, responsibility, and relationship improvement. Conversely, the control group showed minimal changes in these measures.
Conclusions: Mindfulness-based training effectively improves self-awareness, responsibility, and marital satisfaction in distressed couples. It fosters mindful communication, empathy, and accountability, leading to healthier relationships. By promoting emotional regulation and stress reduction, mindfulness helps couples build stronger and more resilient bonds.
